Description
A newspaper article titled "A Great Rangatira" Tribute from Mr Coates.

As follows:
"In connection with the death of Te Rata Mahuta, the Maori "King" a high tribute to his character and outstanding personality was paid yesterday by Rt. Hon. J.G Coates, who held the portfolio of Native Minister for some years.
"I knew the late Maori King long before I became Native Minister," said Mr Coates and "and had the highest regard for his sterling character. Cautious, straightforward, and honourable, it was difficult to get him to say yes or not, but once a decision was come to this word was his bond. He was the King of the Maoris for a long time and was regarded by the Waikato and other tribes as royalty. "I had many dealings with Te Rata Mahuta," continued Mr Coates, and " found him one of the most honourable men with whom I have ever had any thing to do. Of quiet personality, he was very dignified and was obviously a great rangatira. I valued his friendship very highly."
