This is not a Clay bullet, but is in fact a Lead projectile known as a .577 caliber Enfield projectile or minie ball. These were used in the Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket. The white on the projectile is formed when lead is in contact with air and water and It corrodes/oxidize and forms the white coating/patina. Also this bullet has been fired.
