Description
The donor inherited this toki from his grandfather, Thomas Claude Grace, who was given the toki by Te Ahooterangi Wharepu c.1900. Although European, Thomas was under the tutelage of Te Aho at Pirongia and was a classical speaker. Around 1820 a waka was being built on Pirongia, but was abandoned when Matakitaki was attacked by Hongi Hika. Thomas was taken to the site at Pirongia by Te Aho, and this toki was retrieved.
